Sunnyvale’s recycling centers are primarily handled by the SMaRT Station, which serves residents of Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and Palo Alto.

The Sunnyvale Materials Recovery and Transfer (SMaRT) Station is the central facility for garbage, recycling, and CRV redemption.

If you want to redeem California Refund Value (CRV) containers for cash:
Hours: 8:00 AM – 4:45 PM daily.
Appointments: Highly encouraged to skip lines. You can book online or call the station.
Limits: The state limits daily payouts to 100 lbs of plastic/aluminum and 1,000 lbs of glass per person.

The SMaRT Station does not host hazardous waste events, but there are dedicated programs for other items:

Electronics SMaRT Station / Goodwill Residents can drop off e-waste (TVs, computers) at the SMaRT Station for free. Local Goodwill centers also accept working/non-working tech.
Cooking Oil SMaRT Station Limit: 10 gallons in 1-gallon plastic containers with screw-top lids.
Compost & Mulch SMaRT Station Free for residents (bring your own shovel and containers).

Sunnyvale uses a split-cart system (one bin with two sides):
Blue Side (Containers): Aluminum/metal cans, glass bottles, and plastic containers labeled #1–#7.
Paper Side: Cardboard (flattened), junk mail, and magazines.
Prohibited: No plastic bags, no "tanglers" (hoses/wires), and no mixed paper (shredded paper should be bagged in paper bags and put in the paper side).
